Although at first sight the exterior façade and walls seem to be brick, we must not be fooled, it is indeed granite Vietnamit to which are attached (from Marseille) French red tiles that today retain their original color. The great rose window and the Windows of the basilica were originally decorated by a stained-glass windows of Chartres, who were unfortunately destroyed during the second world war. Ho Chi Minh City took the decision to replace these Windows with transparent glass.

Statue of Virgin Mary

At the doors of the Cathedral of Notre Dame, have a small park, whose main attraction is a statue of the Virgin Mary, which was held in Rome (Italy) and carried to Vietnam in 1959. The city named this statue as Santa María Reina de la Paz, which shows that the country, involved in several wars, craves above all peace.

While the Christian community is not the majority in Ho Chi Minh City, this cathedral brings together many of the faithful. By the late afternoon, people were up in the park to pray to the Virgin and put candles in front of the statue.
The interior of the cathedral is decorated in a fairly austere, but on Sunday morning we climb to the top of the bell tower to admire the views around Cong Xa Paris Square.
