The Citadel of Hanoi: Thang Long Imperial City

Part of the history of Vietnam is enclosed in the Citadel of Hanoi (Hoang Thanh Trung Long). Today it is considered World Heritage by Unesco since 2010, although at first glance the City Imperial Thang Long, they are nothing more than structures, palaces and ruins of a former civilization, specifically the Ly, Tran and Le dynasties.

The area occupied by the Citadel is huge, more than 18,000 m2 in the heart of Hanoi, only Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum has an area larger than the point of interest.

Flag Tower of Hanoi

The tower which stands in the interior of the Citadel was built in the 19th century, in the year 1812, and flag that flies atop the Tower, so in honor of the release of the capital from the year 1954 and also to welcome visitors to the city.
This tower is a symbol of the city of Hanoi.

Hanoi Citadel MapOn our way to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and right in front of the Lenin Park, with the Citadel flag tower stands majestic. However, the quickest access is about the Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi, Hoang Dieu street # 18 (see map of Hanoi).

Getting to Hanoi Citadel?

As always, it is best to walk, as the Citadel is in the center of Hanoi, close to other attractions in the city such as the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the One Pillar Pagoda and Hoan Kiem. If you prefer to take a taxi from the center will cost about 30.000VND (about 1 euro, see Vietnam currency).

Museum of Military History of Vietnam

In one corner of the citadel of Hanoi, we have the museum of military history. The ticket price is 1€ and from Monday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00.
