The Phou Si Hill is one of the most elevated in the center of the city of Luang Prabang with its 100 meters. Phou Si Hill, also known as Mount Phousi, is a hill dotted with temples, Buddhist statues and altars, with spectacular 360-degree views of the city of Luang Prabang and the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers.

The Phou Si Hill, also spelled as Phousi Hill, Phu Si Hill, or often called Mount Phousi, is a hill 100 meters of altitude, whose literal translation is sacred hill, which rises in the heart of the city of Luang Prabang (Laos) to the Royal Palace in Luang Prabang. To the top of the Phou Si Hill is Wat Chom Si Temple.

Phou Si Hill is one of the major tourist attractions in Luang Prabang, not so much by their temples but by the spectacular views of the city, views that tend to be called 360 degree since all corners of Luang Prabang can be seen from the top of the Phou Si Hill.

Although there are various ways to climb to the top of the Phou Si Hill, all of them involve walking and climbing many staircases in zigzag form, in total 322 steps to be exact.

There are 3 routes of ascent to the Phou Si Hill:

Late in the afternoon, just before dusk, is one of the busiest moments of the Phou Si Hill.

Wat Chom If


At the top of the Hill is located Phou Si Buddhist temple Wat Chom if, built in the year 1804 by King Anourat. The structure that can be seen from a distance is a stupa of 24 metres high, rectangular white and decorated by 7 Golden parasol base.

Access to the stupa is prohibited and protected by a gate, stupa can only grant this prayer room next to the stupa.

Next to the stupa is Wat Chom Si Temple, a building in white with the frames of doors and windows in red, pointy ceilings with decorations in gold color.

Wat Pa Houak

Directions to Phou Si Hill


To reach the Phou Si Hill ( Luang Prabang, Laos) is to walk, there is no road, escalator or elevator up to the top of the Hill.

Although officially there is no schedule of opening the Phou Si Hill and Temple Wat Tham Phu Si, the box office is open from 6:00 until Sunset . Where there is no one at the box office, it can be accessed the enclosure without paying entry.
